A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR
My memoir, Finding Truth with Michael, explores many of the themes reflected in these resources — growing up inside a high-control religious environment, navigating identity and belonging, and the gradual process of learning to trust one’s own voice.
Some readers of Finding Truth with Michael may recognize parts of their own story in these pages.
Over the years, both through my personal experience and my work as a trauma-informed therapist, I’ve found the following books, organizations, and educational resources to be thoughtful starting points for understanding high-control belief systems and the healing process that can follow.
Leaving or questioning a high-control belief system can be confusing and isolating. The materials below offer pathways for reflection, understanding, and support.
For many people, questioning or leaving a high-control religious system can bring complicated emotions — relief, grief, fear, anger, and uncertainty about identity or belonging. These experiences are not uncommon. Rebuilding trust in your own thoughts, feelings, and choices often takes time.
If parts of this journey feel familiar, you are not alone.

Understanding High-Control Religions and Religious Trauma
Many people who begin questioning or leaving high-control belief systems experience confusion, grief, fear, or loss of community. These experiences are increasingly recognized as forms of religious trauma or spiritual abuse.
While every person’s experience is different, learning about high-control systems and connecting with supportive communities can help people better understand what they have been through and begin rebuilding trust in themselves.

Trauma-Informed Healing Approaches
Many individuals recovering from high-control systems benefit from trauma-informed therapeutic approaches like the ones listed below. These approaches help individuals process trauma, reconnect with their internal experience, and rebuild trust in themselves:
• Attachment-Focused EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
• Internal Family Systems (IFS)
• Somatic and body-based therapies
